The Alphabet of Brutality

By Mercy Mbuge
Anguish and pain consume our land
Bruised hearts and minds, blunder after blunder
Can justice and peace prevail?
Dreams of peace, far-fetched reality
Extrajudicial killings abound
Fire from the police, no questions asked
Ghostly grief haunts from youth
Have we lost our sanity?
In the name of protecting powerful men,
Justice buckles; morals break
Killing the innocent, no end in sight
Life erased by excessive force
Many rise, fists clenched, demanding justice
New cases, fresh blood fill up our screens.
Opressed citizens march Nairobi streets
Preachers curse, elders weep, admonishing the pain
Quiet echoes in the cell
Ruthless force claims Albert Ojwang, dead in police hands
Suspects tremble, politicians point fingers
Terror has struck in the police force
Unpractised police reforms gather dust on polished desks
Vehement orders barked in knee-jerk reactions
When will it end?
X feeds us new cases
Your guess is as good as mine
Zealous police officers are on the streets again
