How Cash Transfers are Putting Traders Back in Business in Kenya

Habiba Diba is a livestock trader at the Jirime livestock market in Northern Kenya’s Marsabit County.

She is the sole provider for her family of eight, paying for her children’s school fees and other household needs. Habiba has been running a livestock trading business since 2012.

However, in 2022, she lost 30 of her 40 trading goats to thieves, almost completely cutting off her income.

Seven Years of Transforming Northern Kenya’s Livestock Value Chain

In northern Kenya, 80 percent of the population relies on livestock keeping as their main source of livelihood. To strengthen their resilience to shocks and stresses, Feed the Future Kenya Livestock Market Systems Activity, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by ACDI/VOCA, aimed to reduce the prevalence and depth of poverty, hunger, and malnutrition. The Activity supported 55,000 livestock traders in improving their household incomes by up to 40 percent.
