Habiba Diba is a livestock trader at the Jirime livestock market in Northern Kenya’s Marsabit County.
She is the sole provider for her family of eight, paying for her children’s school fees and other household needs. Habiba has been running a livestock trading business since 2012.
However, in 2022, she lost 30 of her 40 trading goats to thieves, almost completely cutting off her income.

Back in 1974, Jerry Harvey, a management professor at George Washington University, took a road trip with his family in the sweltering Texas heat. They drove 170 km to Abilene for lunch. After returning, they realized none of them wanted to go. Each person had agreed to the trip only because they thought the others wanted to go as well. That experience led Harvey to coin the Abilene Paradox, a situation in which people make decisions as a group that contradict their true thoughts or feelings. He found that up to 80% of employees experience this in organizations.
The residents of Isiolo County, in Northern Kenya, rely primarily on livestock production for their livelihoods. The county has 26 markets (11 food markets and 15 livestock markets), which provide jobs and a diverse range of products for its 268,002 residents.

Dreams of peace, far-fetched reality

The Activity supported 55,000 livestock traders in improving their household incomes by up to 40 percent.

Miombo: Our Silent Family Member Photo from Pexels In retrospect, I wouldn’t say it was my best idea. But it was the least I could do under the circumstances. The best idea would have been to protest: “Do not cut down miombo, she is a member of this family.” There is a specific tree in
